Toyota's highest ranking woman executive until her arrest in Japan on suspicion of drug law violations was released from custody without charges Wednesday. Julie Hamp, 55, who resigned last week from Toyota Motor Corp., was arrested June 18 on suspicion of importing oxycodone, a narcotic pain killer.

Akcea Therapeutics, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. , announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted Orphan Drug Designation to volanesorsen for the treatment of patients with Familial Chylomicronemia Syndrome . FCS is a rare genetic disease characterized by extremely high triglyceride levels and risk of pancreatitis.

Exclusive: Hospira Wins French Biosimilar Drug Tender At 45 Percent Discount

A major French hospital group has chosen a cheap copycat version of a top-selling drug for treating its patients with rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease and psoriasis in a victory for a new type of medicine known as biosimilars. In a document seen by Reuters, the central purchasing agency for the Assistance Publique - HA pitaux de Paris said on Friday it had decided to buy the biosimilar version of infliximab from Hospira, after the company offered a discount of some 45 percent to branded Remicade.

Vertex wins big with approval of new cystic fibrosis drug

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a potential blockbuster drug by Boston-based Vertex Pharmaceuticals to treat cystic fibrosis that is expected to make the company profitable within three years. The drug, called Orkambi, is a combination of the company's existing drug, Kalydeco, with a new drug which makes it usable by about four times as many patients with the disease.
