Shares of Catalyst Pharmaceuticals jumped 12.7 percent on Wednesday morning as the company announced trial results for one of its drug candidates. The Coral Gables-based company said that one of the four patients with Tourette's Disorder treated with CPP-109 demonstrated a "very clear, clinically significant" reduction in tics.

China captured 169,000 drug crime suspects last year, 60 percent of whom were under the age of 35, with nearly 90 percent having failed to finish middle school, according to a report released Wednesday. The report on China's drug situation, the first released by the Chinese government, said drug smuggling is rampant and "more and more organized and professional, carried out in covert and cunning ways through multiple and constantly changing channels."

With the completion of the $8.4 billion acquisition of Synageva BioPharma by a Connecticut pharmaceutical company specializing in marketing extremely rare drugs, the Bay State has one fewer locally-owned, publicly-traded biotech firm. In a statement today, Alexion , which reported 2,273 employees as of the end of last year, said its combination with 282-employee Synageva gives it a new total head count of "more than 2,800 employees."
Ex-firefighter sues over drug tied to compulsive gambling

A former Indianapolis firefighter is suing two drug companies in federal court, saying they knew a medication she was prescribed could cause compulsive gambling but failed to act. Kathryn Gillette is representing herself in the lawsuit that seeks $42 million in damages from Ridgefield, Connecticut-based Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals and New York-based Pfizer Inc. The lawsuit was filed June 11 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.
