High court rebuffs drug makers' challenge to Bay Area law

A handful of drug take-back programs in the Bay Area and elsewhere can move forward after the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday chose not to hear a drug industry challenge to an Alameda County ordinance. The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association, or PhRMA, the Generic Pharmaceutical Association and the Biotechnology Industry Organization asked the high court in December to hear the case.

Amgen has pulled out of a co-development deal it had with AstraZeneca for an experimental psoriasis drug, which was in the late stages of clinical development, after observing "suicidal ideation" in some patients during clinical testing of the new drug candidate. Dr. Sean E. Harper , executive vice president of research and development at Amgen, said the company believed the likelihood of the drug being required to carry warning labels of suicide risk would limit the potential market for the treatment.

Amgen ends partnership with AstraZeneca on inflammation drug

Amgen Inc said it will terminate a collaboration with AstraZeneca Plc to develop an inflammation drug after it observed suicidal thoughts in the subjects of a trial. AstraZeneca could decide on the development and marketing of the drug for all territories, except for Japan and certain Asian territories, where Kyowa Hakko Kirin has the rights to it, Amgen said.

Amgen First To Win EU Backing For New Kind Of Cholesterol Drug

Amgen Inc's closely watched new cholesterol drug, Repatha, has been recommended for approval in Europe, putting the U.S. drugmaker ahead in a race with rival Sanofi SA. Repatha, or evolocumab, belongs to a new class of cholesterol-lowering drugs known as PCSK9 inhibitors that have the potential to drastically reduce the risk of heart attacks when used in addition to standard treatment.

The recent takeover of high-tech chemicals maker AZ Electronic Materials and a strong U.S. dollar will help Merck KGaA to counter a drop in revenue from its best-selling drug this year, it said on Tuesday. However, shares in the company dropped 1.7 percent, the biggest decline on Germany's blue-chip DAX index, as analysts' expressed concern at a 15.9 percent fall in currency-adjusted sales of multiple sclerosis treatment Rebif -- its biggest medicine -- in the first quarter of this year.
