(Telecompaper) Huawei, Qualcomm and Samsung have welcomed a new video coding standard called MPEG-5 Essential Video Coding (EVC). The standard delivers 4K UHD video with greater compression and efficiency when compared to the previous standard codec. It does this by improving compression capabilities; this in turn will let more screens display 4K, 8K, VR, AR and HDR content and help increase service possibilities. The standard is expected to help provide emerging delivery protocols and networks such as 5G.

Qualcomm quarterly profits fall short of target, sees bigger drop in Q3

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm reported net earnings for its fiscal second quarter to March down 25 percent year-on-year to USD 0.41 per share. The company said demand for mobile handsets was 21 percent below its forecast due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The chipmaker expects an even bigger shortfall of 30 percent in the third quarter to June.
Qualcomm unveils third-generation 5G modem for smartphones

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm has announced its third-generation 5G modem-to-antenna system for smartphones, the Snapdragon X60 5G Modem-RF System. The company said the device is the world's first 5G modem to support spectrum aggregation across all key 5G bands and combinations, including mmWave and sub-6 GHz using FDD and TDD. This will enable speeds of up to 7.5 Gbps down and 3 Gbps up.

Qualcomm forecasts mixed Q2 after December quarter tops guidance

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm reported better-than-expected earnings for its fiscal first quarter to December, down only 8 percent year-on-year to USD 0.80 per share, compared to guidance for a drop of 30 percent or more. Revenues increased 5 percent to USD 5.1 billion, near the high end of its outlook. The company said it was starting to benefit from the ramp up of the 5G market.
