Finland's UPM-Kymmene , the world's largest maker of graphic papers such as magazine paper and newsprint, missed quarterly core profit expectations due to weak paper deliveries and prices. The company said on Tuesday its profit was boosted by cost cuts and favourable exchange rates, but that was offset by weaknesses in its paper and energy divisions.

Apple earnings top expectations thanks to China, iPhone

The Cupertino company reported Monday that it earned $13.6 billion, or $2.33 a share in its fiscal period that ended March 28. In the same period a year earlier, Apple posted a profit of $10.2 billion, or $1.66 a share. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were expecting the company to earn $2.16 a share on sales of $56.1 billion.

American Airlines Group Inc on Friday reported first-quarter profit above analysts' expectations and declared a $0.10 dividend as cheap fuel continued to help its bottom line. American, the world's largest passenger carrier, earned $932 million last quarter, nearly double its profit a year earlier.

Most U.S. companies so far this earnings season have managed to beat Wall Street profit forecasts despite weak sales, but investors hoping corporate headwinds have died down may need to temper their enthusiasm. Of the 169 Standard & Poor's 500 companies that have reported so far, 71 percent beat earnings estimates, many of which were modest to begin with, Thomson Reuters data showed.
