Gov. Rick Snyder today signed tax-reform legislation designed to attract the largest data center in the eastern United States to an empty building outside Grand Rapids. Switch, a Nevada-based company that wants to use the old Steelcase "pyramid" building as the hub for a new 2 million-square-foot campus, will be exempt - along with other data centers - from sales and use taxes on equipment like computers, servers and cabling through 2035, if the industry meets collective job-creation goals.

IPC is applauding U.S. Congress for enacting meaningful tax reform legislation, including making the research and development tax credit permanent. Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act would revive more than 50 temporary tax provisions that expired in 2014, including some important IPC priorities. Bill also includes permanent enhanced expensing for smaller manufacturers, providing annual write-offs of up to $500,000 for investments in equipment and machinery.

AIA welcomes House vote to permanently extend research and development tax credit which lapsed at the end of 2014. This credit supports companies that invest working capital in basic research and in applied research aimed at the creation or improvement of products. More than 70% of the credit is used to fund salaries of R&D workers who hold high-quality jobs that fuel the national economy, while remainder is applied to investment in new plants and equipment.
