An affiliate of AutoNation sold a former dealership site in Fort Lauderdale to a developer who plans to build a Rooms To Go furniture store. Maroone Ford, an affiliate of Fort Lauderdale-based AutoNation , sold the 3.6-acre site for $6 million to SC 1413/RTG Ft Lauderdale.

AutoNation Inc. said new auto sales rose 5 percent in May on strong results from domestic and high-priced luxury vehicles. The increase is part of a broader boost for the industry, which saw overall sales rise 2 percent in May to more than 1.64 million cars and trucks, according to Autodata Corp. That marks the fastest pace of growth since July 2005, buoyed by Memorial Day promotions and strong demand for new SUVs.

1 car dealer cruised past quarterly sales and earnings views, helped by a revitalized U.S. auto market. Reporting before the open, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based company posted first-quarter earnings of 97 cents a share, up 29% from the prior year and 8 cents above consensus analyst estimates.
