Vodacom abandons takeover of Neotel

(Telecompaper) South Africa mobile operator Vodacom has abandoned its proposed acquisition of the majority of Neotel's assets after the companies were unable to obtain regulatory approval for the deal. The takeover of Neotel, controlled by India-based Tata Communications, was first announced in May 2014, as part of Vodacom's efforts to expand in the fixed market and acquire fibre and spectrum assets. In December 2015 the companies said they had scaled back the deal, dropping Neotel's spectrum and offering competition concessions due to regulatory concerns. Since then they refiled for regulatory clearance but were unable to complete the deal before the neogtiating deadline lapsed.

Telia abandons roaming charges in Nordic, Baltic countries

(Telecompaper) Swedish operator Telia announced that customers will no longer pay roaming fees when traveling in the Nordic and Baltic countries. In what the operator claims is a first in the region, national rates will apply for all calls, SMS, MMS and data from 17 December made in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This includes all mobile and broadband subscribers, both businesses and consumers. All customers will benefit from the change automatically and pay the same rates as under their national plan.

Drug Maker Valeant Abandons 'Phantom Pharmacy'

Valeant Pharmaceuticals, a company that has come under intense scrutiny for its drug prices, has cut ties with Philidor following accusations that it was a "phantom pharmacy" used solely to artificially boost sales. Valeant said Friday that the mail-order pharmacy has informed the company that it will shut down as soon as possible.
