Pending sales of single-family homes leapt more than 50 percent last month, as a mild winter combined with continued low interest rates brought buyers forward. The Massachusetts Association of Realtors reported this week that pending sales for single-family homes totaled 6,431 last month, a 54 percent gain from the March 2015 total of 4,177.

Contracts to purchase previously owned homes rebounded more than forecast in February as sales picked up in most of the U.S., a good sign as the spring-selling season approaches. The pending home sales index climbed 3.5%, the biggest gain in a year, after a 3% decrease a month earlier that was larger than initially reported, the Washington-based National Association of Realtors said Monday.

Pending home sales jumped 3.5% in February, to the highest level in seven months, according to the National Association of Realtors . Economists had forecast that the forward-looking indicator rose 1.1% month-on-month, and fell 0.5% on a not-seasonally-adjusted basis compared to the prior year.

Fewer Americans signed contracts to buy homes in January, as the recent hot streak appears to have been curbed by a shortage of properties for sale and colder weather. The National Association of Realtors said that its seasonally adjusted pending home sales index fell 2.5 percent to 106 in January.
