The Florida Senate passed a bill that will prevent schools from collecting and retaining personal information about students. Upon becoming the law, SB 0188 (2014), will place “limitations on the collection of information and the disclosure of confidential and exempt student records.” Specifically, the bill will prevent collection of information about the political affiliation, voting history, religious affiliation, or biometric information of a student or a parent or sibling of the student. Colorado parents who choose to delay or opt out of immunizing their children will have one more hurdle to jump when it comes to enrolling their children in school. The state house voted 42-19 to pass a bill that would require parents who want to opt their children out of immunizations for personal reasons to obtain a note from a medical professional stating that they have been advised of the benefits and risks of vaccines.
