Oil train disaster settlement fund reaches $345 million

The compensation fund for victims of a fiery oil train derailment that claimed 47 lives in a small town in Quebec has grown to $345 million with a contribution from the company that owned the shipment. World Fuel Services Corp., which was accused in a lawsuit of downplaying the volatility of the crude oil from North Dakota's Bakken shale region, agreed to contribute $110 million to the settlement fund, leaving Canadian Pacific Railroad as the only company with potential liability that has declined to contribute.

Lac-Megantic settlement fund grows to $345 million

The settlement fund for victims of the oil train accident in Lac-Megantic, Quebec, that killed 48 people grew by nearly half Monday with the addition of $110 million committed by World Fuel Services Corp. It brings the fund to $345 million , according to Robert Keach, trustee for the bankrupt Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railroad. The settlement fund was at $235 million before World Fuel's settlement Monday,Keach said.

New Jersey's public comment period on proposed $225 million Exxon settlement ends

New Jersey residents are one step closer to finding out whether a court will accept a $225 million settlement proposed by Republican Gov. Chris Christie and his administration in a lawsuit to hold ExxonMobil responsible for environmental damage in the state. Friday marks the end of a 60-day public comment period on the proposed settlement over pollution at two petroleum treatment centres, 16 other facilities and Exxon's retail gas stations across the state.

Chris Christie and his administration in a lawsuit to hold ExxonMobil responsible for environmental damage in the state. Friday marked the end of a 60-day public comment period on the proposed settlement with Exxon over pollution at two petroleum treatment centers in northern New Jersey, 16 other Exxon facilities and the company's retail gas stations across the state.
