For a decade, New Jersey and Exxon Mobil Corp. were adversaries in a lawsuit the state filed seeking to make the oil giant pay for environmental damage it did at two sites where it operated refineries. But on Thursday, the state government and the company were working together in court trying to persuade a judge to accept a $225 million settlement that covers damage not only to the refinery sites but to 1,700 other locations around New Jersey, mostly gas stations.

Settlement in wrongful death suit over brewery keg explosion

A $1.2 million settlement has been reached in a wrongful death lawsuit over a keg explosion at a New Hampshire brewery. The Portsmouth Herald reports 26-year-old worker Benjamin Harris died in April 2012 while pressurizing a plastic beer keg with air at the Redhook Ale Brewery in Portsmouth.

Environmental lawyer: New Jersey-Exxon settlement not enough

A lawyer for an environmental group says a judge should find that New Jersey's proposed $225 million settlement with Exxon Mobil Corp. over natural resource damages is too small. The Natural Resources Defense Council's Selena Kyle says a judge should discount the idea that the state's settlement makes sense because it had the risk of getting less in a trial.
