'Aaron's Law' Faces Tough Political Battle

Two members of the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday introduced a bill aimed at reforming the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act by imposing more requirements for prosecuting violators. Representatives Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., introduced a revised draft of the Act, naming it for Aaron Swartz, the computer programmer and Internet activist who committed suicide in January.

Privacy advocates hope Texas law against online snooping inspires Congress

Texas has become the first state in the nation to require law enforcement to obtain a warrant to read people's email, and privacy advocates are hoping the move will help quicken the passage of a similar proposal in Congress. Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed the privacy bill last week. The proposal was introduced in the Legislature by 29-year-old Republican Rep. Jonathan Stickland, a conservative with Tea Party backing. Liberals also supported the measure.

Aaron's Law would revamp computer fraud penalties

Two U.S. lawmakers have introduced a bill that would prevent the Department of Justice from prosecuting people for violating terms of service for Web-based products, website notices or employment agreements under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA). On Thursday, Representative Zoe Lofgren, a California Democrat, and Senator Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, introduced Aaron's Law, a bill aimed at removing some types of prosecutions under the CFAA.
