Austrian court to rule over legality of frequency auctions

(Telecompaper) The Austrian higher administrative court will decide over the validity of the government's annual auction for mobile frequencies, reports Reuters. The last auction in 2013 brought the Austrian state EUR 2 billion. The highest bidder, Telekom Austria, paid EUR 1 billion to receive 50 percent of the whole spectrum, leaving Drei with no frequencies for the 800 MHzz range used for LTE connections. Drei and T-Mobile had appealed the auction saying that it was anticompetitive. Hutchison's Drei withdrew the appeal, but T-Mobile said that it was not planning to withdraw. The court is expected to take a final decision in November.

The U.S. Treasury's move to curb deals that allow U.S. companies to escape high taxes at home wiped a combined $12.3 billion off the shares of nearly a dozen companies on both sides of the Atlantic on Tuesday, as investors reacted to the surprisingly far-reaching action. But it was unclear whether the tougher stance adopted by the Obama administration on "inversion" deals that allow companies to escape high U.S. taxes by reincorporating abroad, which followed a wave of public criticism, would end any of the handful of deals currently in the works.
