The North Carolina Transportation Department said Tuesday the grants will help improve both freight and passenger service in the state. Most of the money will pay for freight improvements in northeastern North Carolina to upgrade the North Carolina & Virginia Railroad Company in Bertie, Hertford and Northampton counties.The 52-mile rail line serves Nucor Steel, one of the largest employers in the area.
