Position Reference 006 You will have the opportunity to support ESA in activities related to the evaluation of technical deliverables of EO application development projects carried out by external teams Tasks and Activities The scope of work will include Investigate, review synthetize the needs of various enduser communities for specific domains of applications. Analyse EO data sources, product availability, sensor modes, and acquisition logistics required for specific application development projects, prior and during the execution of the projects. Investigate, resolve and keep track of technical issues related to ESAfurnished datasets, also called ESA Customer furnished Items CFI and supporting documents that are made available to the external teams in charge of the application development projects. Review, collect, evaluate and document auxiliary data sources principally but not exclusively nonEO data sources required for calval activities of application development projects Prepare Test Data Sets TDS for delivery to external project teams and used in calval activities of application development projects. Support the review of technical deliverables SW prototypes, technical documentation, preliminary and final products during the engineering and development phase of application development projects, raising problem reports and tracking actions Work with the external project teams for the testing and validation of information product deliveries both intermediate and final products. Perform inhouse analyses and performance assessments of software deliveries, raising Software Problem Reports SPRs and tracking actions. Participate and contribute actively to user consultation workshops, internal coordination meetings, qualification and acceptance tests and project reviews. Generate technical notes and promotional material for communicating project result. Participate to scientific publications on application development projects. Support the review of program performances and production of Key Performance Indicators KPI. Skills and Experience The following skills and experience are mandatory You have a degree in a relevant technical field such as Physics, Electronic Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Geography, Geosciences, Meteorology. Ideally a higherlevel degree qualification such as MSc or PhD in relevant fields of SAR processing, signal and image processing, optical remote sensing, Radar Altimetry, oceanography, hydrology, cryospheric science, geodesy You have at least 5 years of experience in a directly relevant industrial or research environment. Extensive knowledge of ESA EO missions, and related science and applications Specialist skills in exploitation of SAR and passive microwave sensors, optical remote sensing of landcoastal areasoceancryosphere, radar altimetry, atmospheric sounding. Expertise in applications development with EO missions, not exclusively related to ESA missions Experience in the generation and evaluation of global level 3 EO products Knowledge of modern programming languages such as IDL, Python, Matlab, C, C, JAVA under UNIXLINUXMS Windows Experience in algorithm testing and product validation Handson experience in image processing GIS software e.g. Envi, ERDAS, ArcGIS, Arcinfo Knowledge of Open Geospatial Consortium OGC standards, web mapping, GIS data mining techniques and GIS Spatial Analysis tools. Good technical writing and communication skills Expert proficiency in MS Office tools Proactive approach to problem identification and resolution Be able to work both autonomously Be bale to work with multinational team Have a positive attitude to international cooperation. Summary To provide technical support to ESAs Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems ARTES programme. Objective To contribute to the promotion of ARTES applications and services and the development of new applications This includes elaborating the required Feasibility Studies workplans, evaluating the proposals for Feasibility Studies and Applications Projects, negotiating the contracts and implementing them. Responsibilities Duties Identification and characterisation of new services and applications exploiting current and next generation of space systems e.g. Satcom, Earth Observation and Satellite Navigation and their integration in nonspace domains Assessment of the technical and operational requirements applicable to space based applications and their integration with terrestrial solutions to support the identified services and applications in an endtoend context Implement activities with industry, operators, application providers and user communities addressed to develop, validate and promote the utilisation of space based Development and implementation of methodologies and tools for the assessment of endtoend performance of multimedia applications Analysis and assessment of the business and regulatory aspects associated with the launch and commercial operations of satellite based applications and services. Qualifications Experience Masters degree or equivalent qualification in engineering. Relevant professional work experience. Significant experience in satellite and possibly in terrestrial systems requirements analysis, design, implementation and operations, and associated management experience Sound knowledge of the overall space applications market, and specific experience in specifying, developing, evaluating and promoting applications making use of satellites Essential Skills Familiarity with downstream space services and applications and with relevant space technologies i.e. satellite communications, navigation and earth observation Excellent communication and presentation skills Fluent in English, both written and spoken Excellent analytical skills High standard of document drafting Ability to work effectively both within a small team and in an autonomous way. Desirable Skills Knowledge of ESA and in particular of TIA space applications programmes Qualities Comfortable in a scientific customer facing role Positive, cando approach Willingness to adapt role to meet current needs Encouraging and supportive of team coworkers Other information Willing to travel to ESA establishments andor other European locations Must be Comfortable in an international working environment Further Details All roles within Telespazio VEGA have a defined closing date, however if a successful candidate is found before the advert expires the role will be closed early.
