A vacancy for an OnBoard Software Advanced Studies Data Processing Engineer has arisen within the Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage. The Department is involved in the complete lifecycle of activities relating to Data Processing and Embedded Realtime Software OnBoard the Spacecraft. Data processing systems hardware and software host provide a wide range of functional services depending on the mission of the space system, including data monitoringcollection, data transport processing between the system elements as well as defining new onboard computer architectures for platforms and payloads. The Advanced Studies team is involved in a number of transnational planetary exploration robotic projects, focussing on all aspects of data processing and software engineering. The team specialises in a number of robotic engineering topics, including robotic control operating systems computer vision robotic mission operations control telerobotics autonomous systems validation humanrobot interaction planetary locomotion systems robotic arms manipulator control. The successful candidate will be subject to UK National Security Clearance in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs. Your main tasks and responsibilities will include Developing software to demonstrate new dataprocessing techniques. Design and implement prototype realtime software, to implement various signal and data processing functions onboard the space platform. Implement software for European Space Agency and internal RD contracts, based on a set of software requirements e.g. for custom space network protocols, image processing, fault tolerant mechanisms. Commission and bring up new embeddedprocessor boards, including design and implementation of board Basic Software. Define and implement PCbased software for support and verification of software implemented on embedded processors, including GUI. Support internal improvement activities. Participate in the preparation of technical proposals in response to space agencies or other funding institutions, and awarded RD activities. Participate in workshops presentations within Airbus Defence and Space, Working groups and Space Agency establishments. This role will involve some travel for business and as such you must be able to travel accordingly. We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or RoboticsMechatronicsElectronics Engineering with a strong Software Engineering component. Proven experience in Embedded Realtime Systems Software Engineering SW tools and environments within the SatelliteSpace or avionic industry. Proven experience in developing Software using ANSIC, C. HWSW Low Level Interfaces Drivers Embedded Software Development. Excellent practical understanding of Software Engineering Lifecycle Process. Experience with the Development of Robotic Systems. Experience with any of the following types of system is highly beneficial embedded, realtime, multithread, multiprocessormulticore systems. Practical experience of RealTime embedded Operating Systems RTOS Embedded SW experience close to the hardware and RTOS is a must. Practical experience of using Windows, UNIX, Linux operating systems. Familiarity with space software engineering processes and European standards e.g. ECSS. Fluent level in English. Aurora is an established supplier of skilled manpower to ESA and in particular at ESTEC and ESAC. Aurora has the opportunity to expand our support within the Science Operations Department to support the Mission Analysis and Payload Planning System MAPPS at ESAC in Madrid, Spain. Overview The MAPPS software is a wellestablished tool in support of the Science Operations Centres SOCs of the ESA Solar System missions. The MAPPS software provides a wide range of planning and simulation features, used in the different phases of the planning process for the scientific experiments and the consolidation and conflict resolution of the overall experiments planning. This work is intended to provide a number of specialised services to support ESA in System and Software Engineering at ESAC for support to the Science Operations Centres SOCs of the current and future ESA missions, currently Rosetta, ExoMars 2016, SolarOrbiter, BepiColombo and JUICE. This support includes the development of planning and simulation tools and in particular of MAPPS, which in use by the MarsExpress and Rosetta missions and is currently being adapted for use by the ExoMars 2016 and Juice missions. Specific Service Tasks This service is for software support to contribute to the maintenance and further evolution of the MAPPS software, as well as to provide firstline support to the SOCs mission planners and scientific users, based at ESAC Madrid. Tasks include Implementation of new MAPPS features as defined by the users of the different Solar System missions, following the priorities set by the MAPPS SRB Software Review Board. Providing the MAPPS software deliveries following the existing maintenance and release procedures. Improving these procedures where needed, also considering the long lifetime of the software. Verification and validation of the software and execution of the test procedures. Further evolution of the test software, e.g. extending the test cases to cover new features and improving the level of automation. Provide firstline user support, e.g. helping the user configuring and using any new features, analysing potential bugs and providing fixes. Implementation of new MAPPS features, in the area of the Graphical User Interface, and in backend processing software. System and software engineering tasks such as design, development, testing installation, deployment, operations, maintenance with associated documentation according to the ESA software engineering processes. Daily execution of the software development and maintenance tasks, including the monitoring of the progress and the reporting to management. Coordination various development efforts, such that these fit into the overall MAPPS architecture, following the strategy imposed by the MAPPS engineering board. Participation to working groups, workshops, conferences and meetings where might be required. Specific qualification requirements Engineering PhD or Master Degree in computer Science or related fields. Relevant professional experience of at least 4 years You must be able to work in English Specific knowledge is required in the following areas Software engineering and objectoriented programming. Programming languages CC, others. Graphical User Interface programming Qt toolkit, others. Java and or Python for GUI desirable. Software Engineering Standards, such as ECSSEST40C. Software bug reporting systems, specifically JIRA or others. Software versioning systems, specifically GIT or others. Windows and Linux, others. Experience with operational software development will be an advantage. Linux and PCWindows environment. Experience on ESA software engineering processes and software configuration control tools and some scientific background would be an asset. The selected provider must be willing to render the service in a team environment. Good interpersonal and communication skills, together with a proactive attitude to problem solving and customer focus are required. Legal and Security Requirements All applicants must be legally allowed to work in Spain without the need to obtain a work visa. Only European Union citizens can be employed by Aurora in Spain. Applicants are required to provide a copy of their passport and degree certificate. Aurora will validate the Degree with the issuing University and provide evidence to ESA. In line with ESAs security requirements, prior to issuing a letter of employment the applicant shall provide to Aurora a recent official document declaring that they are of good conduct from the country where currently resident, and Aurora will validate your employment history. Location It is expected that the work will be performed at the ESAC, the European Space Astronomy Centre, at Villafranca del Castillo, near Madrid, Spain. Contract You will be registered for both social security and tax in Spain. The standard working hours are 40 per week including sometimes support in the evenings and weekends. There are 12 public holidays and an additional 30 annual days holiday. In addition to public health services Aurora provides private medical insurance in Spain.
