Southwest Airlines posted record profit in the fourth quarter with net income of $404 million, or 59 cents a share, shattering investor expectations of 55 cents a share, according to fourth-quarter results released Thursday. Dallas-based Southwest also posted record 2014 numbers with net income of $1.4 billion, or $2.01 per share.

Schlumberger Ltd., the world's biggest oilfield-services company, tackled the "uncertain environment" of plummeting crude prices head-on by cutting 9,000 jobs and lowering costs at a vessels unit. The 7.1 percent workforce cutback, along with the reduction and reassessment of its WesternGeco fleet, were among steps leading to a $1.77 billion fourth-quarter charge in anticipation of lower spending by customers in 2015, the Houston- and Paris- based company said in an earnings report Thursday.

Australian authorities said on Thursday they would start investigating petrol stations without warning for possible price fixing after a lawmaker accused some of failing to pass on huge falls in the oil price to consumers. The probe will put additional pressure on firms like Chevron Corp and its half-owned retail subsidiary Caltex Australia Ltd, Britain's BP Plc and Dutch Vitol which dominate Australia's service station industry.
