Poles apart: Sea ice melts and grows

2013-10-06 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Climate News Network: It`s one of the most closely-watched questions in climate science: how fast is the Arctic sea ice melting? The definitive answer is that it is still melting rapidly, though not quite as fast it did in 2012, when the extent of the ice sheet was lower than ever recorded. At the other end of the world, though, the Antarctic ice sheet has continued to grow, reaching a new record extent. Some experts believe this is the result not of cooling but of stronger polar winds pushing the ice further outward...

Ten Thousand Walruses Gather on Island As Sea Ice Shrinks

2013-10-03 01:31:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

National Geographic: An estimated ten thousand Pacific walruses have huddled together on a remote island in the Chukchi Sea (map), an unusual phenomenon that's due to a lack of sea ice, experts say. The giant marine mammal is known to "haul out"literally haul its body onto ice or land to rest or warm upon various places along Alaska's coast. But with the Arctic warming up and melting much of its floating ice, there are limited areas for the walruses to gather. This forces them to cluster on land in huge aggregations...

Few Caribou Births in Greenland Linked to Sea Ice Melt

2013-10-02 20:32:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Nature World News: Melting sea ice in Greenland may be leading to fewer caribou births and higher calf mortality, according to new research linking the loss of sea ice with changes of the timing of plant growth on land. Researchers from Penn State University report that sea ice melt spurs the early growth of plants, which goes on to affect the feeding patterns of caribou. The caribou are reportedly bearing fewer offspring, which the researchers, writing in journal Nature Communications, link to the sea ice melt....
