US apparel imports have sharply risen from India and Vietnam in the first half this year, stagnating from Cambodia and Indonesia where unit prices have significantly increased. China has resisted in volume terms, thanks to lower unit prices in most categories of products, reflecting a structural reliance on Chinese suppliers whatever the level of import tariffs. Our series of statistical tables offer a comprehensive comparison of volume, value, and unit value changes per origin and product category in the first half of 2019. The report also includes a detailed comparison of Chinese price trends vs. other origins, through a series of indexes. US apparel imports from China have recovered in the first half of 2019, far from being depressed by threats of higher tariffs. Unit prices of Chinese cotton apparel have significantly declined, while man-made fiber apparel from China were retaining their competitive advantage. as reflected by our statistical review comparing US apparel imports from China with shipments from Rest of the World (RoW) for every category of products, in volume, value and unit value terms. Historical data cover the first half in the past five years, from 2014-2019.

Retailer American Eagle Outfitters says it is continuing to pull production out of China in the wake of new tariffs introduced on imports into the US - and warns if they increase from 15% to 25% it may be forced to pass the cost on to consumers.

Polyester Fiber Prices in China, India, and Pakistan (Weekly Report)

Polyester prices have moved differently in the last seven days on the staple fiber and filament markets, reflecting different levels in demand from downward processors. Our weekly report covers the Polyester Staple Fiber (PSF) on the domestic markets in China, India, and Pakistan. Demand for spun yarns is improving in China, in line with favorable seasonal trends. Yarn prices are however declining, once again, due to a fall of fiber prices. Our weekly report covers the China yarn domestic and import market indicators, as well as local market prices in Qianqing (Zhejiang).
