US Apparel Imports in 1st Half 2018: China vs. Rest of World (Statistical Report)

Although punitive US tariffs do not target Chinese apparel yet, the leading supplier has lost shares of the US apparel import market in the first half, due to the weakness in US demand for man-made fiber apparel. In many categories however, Chinese exporters have been able to improve their market shares, reflecting very different results depending on products. This is reflected by our statistical review comparing US apparel imports from China with shipments from Rest of the World (RoW) for every category of products, in volume, value and unit value terms. Historical data cover the past five years, from 1st Half 2013-2018.

Polyester staple fiber prices have further risen in the last seven days in China and Pakistan, even surging in India after staying stable in August. With raw material costs of PSF and filament producers expected to remain very firm in the coming period, polyester fiber prices are not expected to fall and could even continue rising. Our weekly report covers the Polyester Staple Fiber (PSF) on the domestic markets in China, India, and Pakistan. Polyester filament prices in China are also released, whereas the report includes a price comparison of polyester with cotton and viscose in China.

Down prices have continued rising in the last months, over a lack of production and a surge of demand from domestic and export markets. Spun polyester prices have risen in the last seven days in India and Pakistan after PSF prices have been further raised in both countries. Prices have stabilized in China by contrast. Viscose and cotton yarn markets have also experienced price variations in the meantime.
