Cotton prices have recovered in May in China, even more sharply increasing in the last two weeks. Cotton prices have also rebounded in India whereas staying very high in Pakistan. Polyester prices have therefore stopped rising compared with cotton, which could boost PSF use, in China especially. US apparel imports have been relatively flat in the first quarter with China however rebounding thanks to a new fall of its unit prices. Other origins have got very different results depending on product categories as usual, with a rise of unit values resulting in lower sales in volume terms. Our series of statistical tables offer a comprehensive comparison of volume, value and unit value changes per origin and product category in 1st quarter 2017 and 1st quarter 2018. The report also includes a detailed comparison of Chinese price trends vs other origins, through a series of indexes. Raw material costs have also dropped but margins have fallen in the last months at spandex plants in China. Polyester fiber prices have continued dropping over a lack of demand in China whereas material costs are no more rising and could even fall in the coming days, in line with the sharp decline of crude oil prices.
