Curbs greenhouse gas emissions won't prevent global warming 'danger limit' being reached

Independent: The planned curbs in greenhouse gas emissions by the nations of the world fall well short of what is required to avoid global average temperatures exceeding the danger limit of 2C this century, a report has warned. An analysis of the pledges made by countries attending the climate summit in Paris this December has found that the promised reductions as they stand will still exceed the amount of greenhouses gases widely considered to breach of the safe threshold, it says. Japan proposes cutting emissions 26 percent by 2030

Associated Press: Japan is proposing to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by up to 26 percent by 2030 amid international efforts to create a new framework for addressing climate change. The final draft of the government target, released Thursday, said Japan will aim to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 26 percent by 2030 from 2013 levels, or 25.4 percent from 2005 levels. The US state was already one of the most ambitious in its previous targets and has forced companies to pay for their carbon pollution. Mr Brown said the new target must be met for the sake of future generations. He called the plan "the most aggressive benchmark...

Reuters: The U.S. Senate majority leader on Wednesday urged countries to go slowly on committing to cut carbon emissions in any global agreement later this year, in his latest effort to cripple President Barack Obama's clean power plan. Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, a Republican from coal-producing Kentucky, told a congressional panel that as long he is in charge of the Senate, "this body is not going to be signing off on any back door energy tax." "The failure of Congress to sign off should signal...
