Last week in media: updates on OTT services from Viacom, WarnerMedia and NBCUniversal; Lions Gate anticipated to do well

(Telecompaper) Much of last week's news centered around the OTT video market. The TPSI Global Consumer Media ended the week down 0.3 percent, slightly outperforming the broader market as measured by the S&P 500 index, which was down 0.8 percent. There were two double digit winners: Salem Media and Lions Gate. On the losing end, EW Scripps, McClatchy and Tencent  Music performed especially poorly.

(Telecompaper) Walt Disney once more dominated the news in the global media market. The Telecompaper Stock Index (TPSI) Global Consumer Media performed in line (-2.1%) with the S&P 500 index (-2.2%) in week 19. Other news was mostly earnings and streaming video related. ITV, Snap and McClathcy all lost 11 percent, whereas Sinclair Broadcast was the week's biggest winner with a gain of no less than 38 percent. This puts Sinclair easily on top in the year-to-date view, gaining 135 percent. Snap, winning 90 percent, nearly doubled from the end of 2018.

FOX, NBCUniversal, and Viacom have unveiled OpenAP 2.0, expanding the audience platform into a centralized video marketplace with workflow automation for national linear and long-form digital video, developed in collaboration with Accenture and FreeWheel.

T-Mobile US to launch mobile TV services with Viacom

(Telecompaper) T-Mobile US said it will later this year introduce Viacom channels and on-demand content to its subscribers. T-Mobile US last year announced plans to launch its own online TV and video service, following its acquisition of the Layer3 platform. The introduction of the service has taken longer than expected for the company, but it says now that it will first start an in-home TV service, "designed to replace cable for the 5G era" and then introduce mobile TV services beginning with Viacom as a cornerstone launch partner.

Viacom agrees to acquire Pluto TV

Viacom (NASDAQ: VIAB, VIA) has announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Pluto TV, the leading free streaming television service in the U.S., for $340 million in cash.
