Worldwide Direct Action Campaigns Target Fossil Fuel Industry
2013-07-12 22:44:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
EcoWatch: As the summer heats up, awareness is quickly escalating across the world as different direct action campaigns target a common denominator: the fossil fuel industry. Earlier this year, organizers including 350.org launched the Summer Heat and Fearless Summer campaigns, calling for a global uprising to "peacefully but firmly" stand up to the industry that is wrecking our future. As people are joining together to embrace non-violent direct action on behalf of the climate, 350.org published the...

James Hansen: Fossil fuel addiction could trigger runaway global warming
2013-07-10 12:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: The world is currently on course to exploit all its remaining fossil fuel resources, a prospect that would produce a "different, practically uninhabitable planet" by triggering a "low-end runaway greenhouse effect." This is the conclusion of a new scientific paper by Prof James Hansen, the former head of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies and the world's best known climate scientist. The paper due to be published later this month by Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A (Phil....

Guardian: A hoax media release, announcing a big Australian coal mine had lost critical funding, kicked off a busy year for anti-fossil fuel campaigners and a challenging one for the companies that extract energy and their financial backers. Shares in Whitehaven Coal, developer of the controversial Maules Creek mine in New South Wales, plunged 9% in just two minutes after the spoof circulated the market slicing A$314m from its market capitalisation and A$67m from the stake of its biggest shareholder,...

Press Association: Fossil fuel imports rose by a tenth in 2011 to their highest level recorded by official statistics, it has been revealed. Exports of fossil fuels also declined in 2011, the most recent year for which figures are available. Energy from waste and renewables including...

Australia: Gov't Report Says 80% of Fossil Fuel Reserves Must Stay in the Ground
2013-06-17 07:52:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ABC: The latest Climate Commission report has warned that 80 per cent of global fossil fuel reserves will have to stay in the ground if the planet is to avoid dangerous climate change. The paper says global emissions need to trend downward by the end of the decade to keep temperatures at a "manageable" level. Professor Will Steffen, a climate commissioner who co-authored the report, says reaching the goal will be a challenge, given greenhouse gas concentrations are now at the highest level on record....
