Global Fossil Fuel Subsidies Topped $620 Billion in 2011
2013-02-27 22:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
EcoWatch: The energy game is rigged in favor of fossil fuels because we omit the environmental and health costs of burning coal, oil and natural gas from their prices. Subsidies manipulate the game even further. According to conservative estimates from the Global Subsidies Initiative and the International Energy Agency (IEA), governments around the world spent more than $620 billion to subsidize fossil fuel energy in 2011: some $100 billion for production and $523 billion for consumption. This was 20 percent...

Peru: Fossil fuel company looking to exploit deposits in Manu National Park
2013-02-11 21:13:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Mongabay: Pluspetrol, an Argentine oil and gas company, is eyeing a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Amazon rainforest for gas production, according to documents seen by the Guardian. Manu National Park in eastern Peru is considered one of the most biodiverse places on Earth and is home to indigenous tribes living in voluntary isolation. The Guardian received access to a document written by the environment agency, Quartz Services S.A., for Pluspetrol, which includes references to fossil fuel "development"...

Australian wind farms undercut fossil fuel power prices
2013-02-08 05:37:13| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
BusinessGreen: New research from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) has this week provided further evidence that renewable energy can increasingly compete on cost with fossil fuels, revealing that unsubsidised wind farms can undercut electricity sold by new coal or gas-fired power plants. The analysis suggests electricity can be provided from wind farms at a cost of A$80/MWh, while the cost of power from new coal or gas plants, which is now subject to a carbon tax, stands at A$143/MWh and A$116/MWh respectively....

Wind Energy Now Cheaper Than Fossil Fuel Power Plants in Australia
2013-02-07 17:31:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Yale Environment 360: Unsubsidized wind power is now cheaper than electricity produced from new coal- and natural gas-fired power stations in Australia, according to an analysis by Bloomberg New Energy Finance. The study said that electricity can be supplied from a new wind farm at a cost of 80 Australian dollars per megawatt hour, compared to 143 Australian dollars from a new coal plant and 116 Australian dollars from a new natural gas plant. Even without a recently imposed carbon price, wind energy is 14 percent cheaper...

IEA chief: 'Fossil fuel subsidies are public enemy number one' for green energy
2013-02-04 13:36:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
BusinessGreen: The International Energy Agency (IEA)'s chief economist has today again urged governments around the world to end the $0.5tr of annual subsidies given to oil and gas production, while also warning that policy instability has become the greatest challenge facing renewable energy markets. Speaking to delegates at the annual European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) conference in Vienna, the IEA's Dr Fatih Birol described fossil fuel subsidies as "public enemy number one" for the production of sustainable...
