Kenyan telecoms operator, Safaricom, has applied for a digital broadcasting licence in order to be able to offer television along side its other broadband products. The company has also received approval to import set-top boxes for sale in the local market.

Jolla offers Sailfish licence, to launch secure OS

(Telecompaper) Jollaannounced plans to build a 'secure' version of its Sailfish operating system for mobile services, tapping into the growing concern for private communications. The Finnish company partnered with SSH Communications Security on the project and will demonstrate the new software at Mobile World Congress. Sailfish Secure will be based on a security-hardened version of the OS and SSH's communication encryption and key management platform.The software will be targeted at companies and public officials interested in a secure mobile solution, developed in Europe. Sailfish invited other industry players to join the project, saying the software will not be tied to a particular hardware platform. The company is also showing at MWC Sailfish 2.0, the latest version of the OS that will be offered to smartphone and tablet OEMs for licensing. The new OS comes with an enhanced user interface, support for Intel processors and additional software integration capabilitiesfor partners. Tieto and Qt offer integration support for companies interested in integrating Sailfish in their own devices.

No future for TV licence, MPs say
