After firing a security guard accused of beating a customer unconscious, Whole Foods Market on Saturday announced it has cut ties entirely with the security firm that had been patrolling its Oakland store. Contra Costa-based A.G.S. Private Security will be the store's new security firm, according to company spokeswoman Beth Krauss.

A Whole Foods market in Oakland is coming under criticism after witnesses said a security guard attacked a customer trying to use an Electronic Benefits Transfer card, KNTV-TV reported. The first witness, Zoe Marks, posted pictures online of the person she described as the victim, saying he was "slammed repeatedly against concrete pillars, put in a chokehold, restrained, and suffocated until he was thrown face down on the pavement unconscious."

Oakland helping low-income seniors with old garbage bill

The city of Oakland has identified funding to restore a garbage discount program for low-income seniors for one year, public works officials said today. About 1,500 low-income seniors who live in single-family buildings had been receiving a discount on their garbage bills until July 1, when new trash, compost and recycling service contracts were implemented by the city and the discount program ended.
