During next 3 years, Virgin America and Alaska Airlines will use the Traffic Aware Planner application, to make "traffic aware strategic aircrew requests". TAP connects directly to aircraft avionics information hub on aircraft, reading current position and altitude of aircraft, flight route, and other real-time information that defines plane's current situation and active flight plan. Software then looks for variety of route and/or altitude changes that could save fuel or flight time.
