Employment at American Airlines and Southwest Airlines was up in July

Employment at U.S. airlines, including at American Airlines and Southwest Airlines, increased by nearly 3 percent in July from a year earlier, according to new data from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Dallas-based Southwest added 44,718 employees during that time, the most new employees among two dozen airlines.

On Thursday, Barclays analyst David Fintzen raised Alaska Air's price target to 90 from an earlier outlook of 80. JetBlue's price target was raised to 32 from 27, and Southwest's was raised to 41 from 39. Alaska Air shares edged up 0.5% to 79.54 in the stock market today . JetBlue shares rose 1.2% to 26.97.
