American Airlines Inc. won the right Friday to take over an Alaska Airlines Inc. route between Los Angeles and Mexico City, staving off a challenge from Delta Air Lines Inc. The U.S. Department of Transportation approved a request from American and Alaska to transfer the Alaska route to American. Fort Worth-based American plans to operate two round trips a day, compared with Alaska's one daily flight.

The ultra-low-cost airline reintroduced daily flights to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic and twice-weekly flights to Kingston, Jamaica. Service to Lima, Peru has also been increased to daily flights.

Southwest Airlines raises curtain on new seating and it's about time

Essentially conceding that the new passenger seat that it began rolling out three years ago has been a flop, Southwest Airlines announced it will begin introducing a new, thinner and - most notably - wider seat on aircraft it begins adding to its fleet in mid-2016. The seat arriving on Southwest's new planes starting next year will be 17.8 inches wide, as opposed to the 17.1-inch width of seats introduced as part of the carrier's highly-touted Evolve airplane interior makeover that was first announced in 2012 and slowly rolled out on hundreds of Southwest aircraft over the past three years.

After servicing Missouri for more than 30 years, Southwest Airlines showed its loyalty to the state in a unique way Wednesday. At a "show time" themed party at a hangar in Kansas City International Airport, Southwest executives debuted Missouri One, a 737 that features a paint scheme of the state's flag on its body, in front of Gov. Jay Nixon, Kansas City Mayor Sly James and more.
