Austria awards seven licences in 5G pioneer bands 3.4-3.8 GHz

(Telecompaper) Austrian regulator RTR has closed the auction for regional licences for frequencies in the 5G pioneer bands 3.4-3.8 GHz, with seven successful bidders who will pay a total of around EUR 188 million for the licences. The next step will be the auction of multi-band licences in spring 2020.

Australia raises AUD 853 mln in auction of 5G spectrum in 3.6 GHz band

(Telecompaper) Four companies have won 5G spectrum in the Australian Communication and Media Authority's latest auction of the 3.6 GHz band. According to the regulator, all 350 lots available in the auction were sold, realising total revenue of AUD 853 million. Dense Air Australia won 29 lots for AUD 18.49 million; Mobile JV, the joint venture of TPG Telecom and Vodafone Hutchison Australia, won 131 lots for AUD 263.2 million; Optus won 47 lots for AUD 185 million; and Telstra won 143 lots for AUD 386 million. Licences won at auction will commence in March 2020 and will run until 13 December 2030.

China awards 5G trial spectrum for 3.5 GHz, 2.6 GHz, 4.8 GHz bands

(Telecompaper) China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has awarded trial spectrum to China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom to test 5G services. The latter two operators were offered frequencies in the 3,400-3,500 MHz band, available nationwide for 5G trials until 30 June 2020, while China Mobile received spectrum in the 2.6 GHz and 4.8 GHz bands.

FCC approves changes to 3.5 GHz licences, proposes opening up 6 GHz band

(Telecompaper) The Commission established rules in 2015 to facilitate shared access between federal government bodies and other users of the 3.5 GHz band, creating what is known as Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS). It created a three-tiered framework of users consisting of incumbents, Priority Access Licenses (PALs) and General Authorized Access (GAA) users.

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm has released its first chipsets for Wi-Fi in the 60 GHz band. The QCA64x8 and QCA64x1 series deliver 10+ Gbps speeds and wired-equivalent latency, as well as extended device battery life, the vendor said. They are expected to support new applications such as UHD video streaming, VR/AR, mobile screen casting and fixed wireless mesh backhaul.
