Qualcomm unveils first mmWave, sub-6 GHz RF modules for smartphones

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm has unveiled what it says is the world's first fully-integrated 5G NR millimeter wave (mmWave) and sub-6 GHz RF modules for smartphones and other mobile devices. The Qualcomm QTM052 mmWave antenna module family and the Qualcomm QPM56xx sub-6 GHz RF module family work with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem to provide modem-to-antenna capabilities across several spectrum bands in a very compact footprint suited for integration in mobile devices. Up to now, mmWave was considered impractical for mobile devices and networks.

Vodafone, Telefonica partner on fibre backhaul in Germany, reach deal on 3.5 GHz spectrum

(Telecompaper) Vodafone and Telefonica Deutschland have agreed to launch a pilot project to connect their mobile sites to each other's fibre-optic lines. Beginning in July, the first 100 shared or neighbouring mobile sites will be connected to the companies' respective fibre networks.

EU spectrum regulators recommend award of 3.4-3.8, 26 GHz bands for 5G by 2020

(Telecompaper) The EU's Radio Spectrum Policy Group has issued its second opinion on 5G, to aid policymakers in planning for the next generation of mobile technology. The advisory group calls for large blocks of the 3.4-3.8 GHz band to be made available for mobile operators by 2020, as well as part of the 26 GHz band by the same date.

VodafoneZiggo CEO calls for Dutch govt to open up 3.5 GHz band for mobile

(Telecompaper) Jeroen Hoencamp, CEO of VodafoneZiggo, had called for a nation digitalisation summit, less regulation and the complete release of the 3.5 GHz band for 5G networks in the Netherlands. At a debate organised by VodafoneZiggo with politicians and industry leaders, the CEO said the country may be a leader in connectivity, but the government needs to work harder at creating the right environment for long-term investment in digital infrastructure or the country will fall behind.

Czech 3.7 GHz tender attracts 2 new entrants

(Telecompaper) Czech regulator CTU announced the end of the auction for frequencies in the 3,600-3,800 MHz band. The successful applicants in the auction include two established operators, O2 Czech Republic and Vodafone Czech Republic, and two new companies, Nordic Telecom 5G and PODA. In total the auction generated CZK 1.015 billion in proceeds.
