Man fatally struck lying on NJ Transit tracks in Hackensack

A man lying on New Jersey Transit tracks was fatally struck by a westbound commuter train during the evening rush hour on Wednesday, a spokeswoman for the rail line said. There were no injuries among the passengers or crew on the four-car Pascack Valley Line train, which was traveling from Hoboken toward its terminal destination in Spring Valley, N.Y., when it hit the man on the track near Central Avenue.

Authorities have detained a passenger who allegedly pulled a knife on a New Jersey Transit train conductor while the train was in motion. The passenger was arrested when the train stopped at the Red Bank station in Monmouth County.

The president of the B.C. Chamber of Commerce insists only a minority of businesses in Metro Vancouver object to a proposed new 0.5 per cent sales tax for transit and transportation. John Winter says fears of business flowing out of the region because of the proposed Congestion Improvement Tax have been voiced mainly in Langley, where shoppers may be tempted to go east to Abbotsford to avoid the new tax.
