Michael Chaney has been appointed chairman of Wesfarmers to succeed Bob Every, returning to the company he led as chief executive for 13 years. Chaney, who most recently served as chairman of Woodside Petroleum, earlier was CEO of the Perth-based conglomerate, which owns Coles supermarkets and the Bunnings homeware chair, serving from 1992 until 2005.
Wesfarmers offers $300m unsecured Australian bonds

Wesfarmers, owner of Australia's Coles supermarket chain, is offering its first unsecured domestic bond in more than two years. The conglomerate with businesses including retailers, coal mining and insurance, is marketing $300 million of 5 1/2-year fixed-rate bonds at a yield of about 0.95 percentage point more than the swap rate, according to an e- mailed statement from joint sale manager Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Coles, Bunnings and Kmart fuel retail sales growth at Wesfarmers

Perth-based conglomerate Wesfarmers continues to take market share from arch-rival Woolworths, lifting retail sales by a higher-than-expected 3.3 per cent to $13.12 billion in the three months ended March as strong sales growth at Bunnings, Kmart, Coles and Officeworks offset weakness in liquor stores, petrol stations and Target. Wesfarmers managing director Richard Goyder described the retail sales growth, which exceeded market forecasts of 2.5 per cent, as pleasing.
