Nvidias Tegra K1 comes to the US in Googles 3D depth-sensing Tango tablet

2014-06-06 14:28:03| Extremetech

The first device powered by Nvidia's new Tegra K1 SoC to hit the US will be Google's Tango tablet devkit. The K1 is notable for being the first mobile SoC to include a "desktop-class" GPU (a cut-down 192-core Kepler). The Tango tablet follows on from the Tango smartphone, which Google showed off back in February. The first K1-powered tablet, when it arrives later this year (probably soon), will set you back a grand total of $1024 -- but that's a small price to pay for a mobile walk-around device with advanced 3D sensing and mapping capabilities.

Google to release 3D test tablet for developers

2014-06-06 09:07:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Google is releasing an experimental tablet to help developers work on its project to create a smartphone with 3D sensors. Known as Project Tango, the aim is create hardware and software to track the full 3D motion of the device, while simultaneously creating a map of the environment. The sensors allow the device to make over a quarter million 3D measurements every second, updating its position and orientation in real-time, combining that data into a single 3D model of the space around the user. The development kit comes with a 7-inch tablet running the new Nvidia Tegra K1 processor, 4GB RAM and 128 GB storage, as well as a motion tracking camera, integrated depth sensing, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth low energy and LTE. The device runs Android and comes with development APIs to provide position, orientation and depth data to standard Android applications. Google will regularly update the algorithms and APIs and provide software updates to developers. Interested developers can sign up on the company's website to purchase the kit when it goes on sale later this year. It will cost USD 1,024.

Barnes & Noble, Samsung to offer co-branded Nook tablet

2014-06-05 15:53:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Barnes & Noble has struck a deal to develop its Nook tablets with Samsung Electronics. The companies announced a partnership to develop co-branded Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook tablets that feature the Barnes & Noble digital reading software and services. The companies expect to introduce the first tablet in a 7-inch version in the US in early August. The co-branded tablets will be prominently displayed along with Nook eReaders and sold at Barnes & Noble's nearly 700 bookstores across the US and online at bn.com. The agreement marks an end to Barnes & Noble's search for a strategic partner for the Nook business, which has been suffering from declining sales in the face of tough competition in the tablet market. The company said the Samsung agreement will help reduce its exposure to the substantial cost structure and other financial commitments that accompany ownership of the hardware production aspects of the Nook tablet business. Going forward, the company will be able to focus on its expertise in digital books and content sales.
