China auto sales rise again in January on strong SUV demand

" New car sales in China rose by more than 9 percent last month as strong demand for SUVs offset a decline in sales of sedans. Figures released Friday by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers show that sales of cars, SUVs and minivans in the world's biggest auto market totaled 2.23 million vehicles in January.

The North American auto industry is likely to sell a record 18.2 million number of cars and light trucks this year before higher interest rates and urbanization starts putting the brakes on growth, an expert said. "We're still seeing robust demand, but we're entering into a slower growth phase," Mike Wall, director of automotive analysis for IHS Automotive, said Wall in a taping of West Michigan Week , which will air this weekend on WGVU-TV.
