Fedex has agreed to pay $228 million to settle litigation claiming the company short-changed its drivers on pay and benefits by improperly labeling them as independent contractors. The settlement disclosed on Friday is directly related to a decision against the Memphis, Tenn.-based package delivery company in August, when a federal appeals court in Oakland found that FedEx Corp. misclassified 2,300 FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery drivers working in California from 2000 to 2007 as independent contractors.

Realtors applaud SJC ruling on independent contractors

A statewide Realtor advocacy group is applauding the state Supreme Judicial Court's decision this week to upheld a lower court's ruling regarding real-estate agents' decision to affiliate as independent contractors. The Massachusetts Association of Realtors said the SJC's decision in Monell vs. Boston Pads LLC is a win for consumers and the entire real-estate industry, saying the ability for real- estate agents to choose to affiliate with real-estate brokers as independent contractors has been the backbone of the profession for more than 100 years.
