Dutch threaten Facebook with fine over privacy investigation

2015-05-06 11:19:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) The Dutch privacy regulator (CBP) said it will fine Facebook for not providing all the information the regulator requested, for its investigation into Facebook's privacy policy, the NOS reported. Facebook responded that it will provide further information on part of the CBP's question about the regulator's jurisdiction and the applicability of the country's privacy rules. CBP will wait to impose the fine after evaluating the information. At the end of last year, the CBP said it would look into Facebook's privacy policy. The investigation was prompted by the company's announcement of new privacy conditions for Facebook users from January. The privacy policy went into effect on 30 January. The CBP wants the requested information to determine its jurisdiction and the applicability of the Data Protection Act (Wbp). The regulator had asked Facebook to delay the implementation of its new privacy policy until the investigation was over. The privacy policy gave Facebook the right to use information and photos in user profiles for commercial purposes.

IBM, Facebook enter data-fueled marketing partnership

2015-05-06 09:14:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) IBM and Facebook have signed a data-fueled marketing partnership deal, the New York Times reported. The partnership will combine data that marketers have on customers, such as purchase behaviour, responses to a marketer email campaigns and call centre inquiries, with Facebook data including likes, comments and complaints. IBM data analytics will be used to help big brands find and communicate with more finely targeted audiences on Facebook, what the company calls a "personalization at scale." The insights gleaned from analysing Facebook and other data will also help companies better target consumers in other marketing channels, such as ads on the web and email programmes. Facebook will also be the first company to join IBM's new Commerce ThinkLab. The new lab is a collaborative setting for applied research involving teams from major consumer brands and retailers, IBM industry experts and data scientists, and teams from Facebook. IBM is looking to the partnership for more revenue for its data commerce business. For Facebook, the incentive is not more ads on Facebook but better-performing ones that can command higher rates.
