Mobile app data collection poses risks for enterprises, Gartner says

Most mobile applications will collect and analyze information about end users by 2015, a trend that raises both rewards and risks for enterprises, according to analyst firm Gartner. In fact, 25 percent of companies that take advantage of consumer data "will face damage to their reputations due to inadequate understanding of information trust issues," Gartner analyst Roxane Edjlali wrote in the report, "Adapt Your Information Infrastructure in the Age of Consumer-Centric Mobile Apps."

Big data hype didn't speed growth in the BI market, Gartner says

All the hype around big data last year didn't drive big growth in the worldwide BI (business intelligence) and analytics market, according to research firm Gartner. While the BI and analytics market grew about 8 percent to $14.4 billion in 2013, the uptick could have been even greater, Gartner said.

Chip Market Grew 5% in 2013, Says Gartner

Worldwide IT spending this year will rise 3.2 percent to $3.8 trillion, driven by rebounding device sales and strong growth in the enterprise software category, according to analyst firm Gartner. Enterprise software revenue will jump 6.9 percent to $320 billion, thanks to increased interest in social software, database technologies and data management technologies, according to Gartner.

Oracle overtakes IBM as second-largest software vendor, Gartner says

Oracle has overtaken rival IBM as the world's second-largest software vendor by pulling in $29.6 billion in software revenue during 2013, according to analyst firm Gartner. "Global trends around big data and analytics with business investment in database and cloud-based applications helped to drive Oracle's top-line growth," Gartner research vice president Chad Eschinger said in a statement.
