U.S. vehicle safety regulators' tougher posture toward automakers is a "new phase" in the government's relations with the industry and will likely mean higher costs, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne said Tuesday. "We're beginning to live through a new phase of regulation in the United States," Marchionne told reporters after the head of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration criticized Fiat Chrysler's ( NHTSA chief Mark Rosekind on Monday said the agency was reviewing Fiat Chrysler's handling of 20 recalls and criticized the automaker for failing to act aggressively enough to repair 10 million vehicles covered by the actions.

Fiat Chrysler Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne said on Saturday that he had visited with Tesla Motors Inc, Apple Inc and Google Inc during a recent trip to California. Marchionne, speaking on the sidelines of the opening of a Maserati dealership near Toronto, said he had met with Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook and Tesla CEO and founder Elon Musk, among others, on the trip, during which he rode in Google's self-driving car.

Fiat Chrysler has asked a Georgia judge for a new trial a month after a jury awarded $150 million to the family of a 4-year-old Georgia boy killed in a crash and fire involving a Jeep. The company, which makes Jeeps, says the jury's award of $120 million for the life of Remington Walden and $30 million for his pain and suffering are "grossly excessive" and illegal under Georgia law.
