Regulator could impose new wholesale rules, impacting wireless roaming rates

Canada's telecom regulator will issue a decision today that could affect the fees charged to consumers when they roam with their wireless devices outside of their home network areas. The ruling from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission comes seven months after hearings were launched into the health of the country's wholesale wireless market, considered the backbone of Canada's mobile services sector.

BSNL cuts national roaming tariffs

(Telecompaper) Indian state-run operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has cut its roaming tariff by up to 40 percent for its prepaid and postpaid mobile subscribers. The price reductions are effective 1 May, The Economic Times reports. BSNL's roaming rates for incoming calls have now dropped by 40 percent, while for STD, the reduction was of 23 percent. The operator has reduced tariffs for local calls by 20 percent, while local and national SMS rates have been cut by 75 percent.

Belgium, Luxembourg regulators agree to end roaming costs

(Telecompaper) The Belgian and Luxembourg telecom regulators have reached an agreement aimed at ending roaming surcharges for mobile users in the two countries. The agreement will allow a Belgian phone number to be linked to a Luxembourg network, ending the national distinctions for the IMSI and phone number. This will allow Luxembourg operators to offer services to customers in Belgium based on existing roaming agreements in Luxembourg, and Belgian operators will be able to do the same with Luxembourg numbers. According to a statement from Belgian regulator BIPT, the agreement was brought about after a request from Luxembourg operator Join Experience. Join, a joint venture started by Post Luxembourg and Join Wireless, plans to launch soon an offer for voice, messaging and data services at the same prices in Belgium and Luxembourg. It already offers plans with domestic and EU roaming at the same price.
