Apple makes renewable energy push with solar, fuel cells
2013-03-21 19:20:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: Apple Inc now runs its largest U.S. data center entirely on renewable energy, with a majority of the power generated on-site from solar panels and fuel cells, the company's chief financial officer, Peter Oppenheimer, said on Thursday. The data center in Maiden, North Carolina, which supports Internet storage and Apple's service-hosting iCloud product, produces 167 million kilowatts -- the power equivalent of 17,600 homes for one year -- from a 100-acre solar farm and fuel cell installations provided...

Israel: New technique dusts off solar cells, increases efficacy
2013-03-18 20:25:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Mother Nature Network: A new technique could help keep dust off of solar cells, a major obstacle that reduces the efficiency of photovoltaic panels. The technique, developed by Sergey Biryukov, a researcher at the Ben-Gurion National Solar Energy Center, uses an electric field to charge dust and small particles before repelling them. At a recent demonstration, Biryukov poured a small amount of a dustlike powder onto an electrified solar cell. The dust was immediately thrown back prevented by the electric field from settling...

How to make animals smarter: Just add human brain cells
2013-03-08 17:28:28| Extremetech
A new study describing human brain cells transplanted from fetal tissue into mice claims to have made them smarter. While any such claims are often questionable, this particular study also affords us a unique insight into how brains work, and how we might eventually build -- superbrains.
