Post Internal Research Fellow PostDoc in Optical Ground Support Equipment This post is classified F2 on the Coordinated Organisations salary scale. Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Description Within the Mechatronics and Optics Division, the Optics Section provides functional support to ESA projects and carries out technological research activities in the following areas optical component technology, such as microoptics, passive integrated optics, xray optics optical instrumentation, such as spectroradiometric imaging instruments in the visible and infrared interferometers testing, calibration and performance verification of optical systems. Fields of activitiesresearch In the frame of calibrating hyperspectral instruments, the development of optical ground support equipment OGSE is very cost and time intensive. Generally speaking, a new and dedicated OGSE has to be designed and built from scratch for each instrument. This often leads to delayed and costly OGSEs which may end up not being an appropriate fit for the hyperspectral instrument needing to be calibrated. The selected candidate will work on the following range of topics linked to OGSEs for hyperspectral instruments, initially covering ultraviolet UV, visible VIS and possibly shortwave infrared SWIR spectral range Investigating existing OGSEs Looking at tradeoffs between different setup, light sources, etc. Identifying commonalities between different OGSE use for instruments, such that a more general OGSE could potentially be designed and then used by several different instruments Technical competencies Ability to conduct research autonomously Breadth of exposure coming from past andor current researchactivities Researchpublication record Knowledge relevant to the field of research General interest in space and space research Ability to gather and share relevant information Behavioural competencies Innovation Creativity Continuous Learning Self Motivation Communication Problem Solving Relationship Management CrossCultural Sensitivity Education Applicants should have recently completed, or be close to completion of a PhD in physics or optical engineering. Preference will be given to applications submitted by candidates within five years of receiving their PhD. Additional requirements Ideally, candidates should have a background in optical design as well as experimental physicsengineering. Some experience in the mechanical design, assembly, alignment and testing of optical instrumentation would be an asset. The Research Fellow must be able to work in a team with other international investigators in a spirit of positive cooperation and, at the same time, be capable of working autonomously in hisher area of research. At the end of the fellowship, the Research Fellow will be required to summarize the work completed in papers to be submitted to specialized conferencesjournals. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset. The Team supports the development, evolution and implementation of ESAs exploration strategy and manages the benefits from ESAs space exploration activities. This includes supporting international activities, including the international Space Exploration Coordination Group ISECG, and the development of new partnerships and governance schemes. The Team also works to implement new innovation partnerships with commercial space and nonspace sectors for activities related to exploration of the Moon, Mars and low Earth orbit, while seeking to increase commercial and industrial utilization of the International Space Station. The Team leads a number of activities to prepare future exploration missions and technologies, working closely with the space science community. Aspects to be considered could include benefit mapping logic chain, business change approach taxonomy of measures for exploration benefits reference class database of exploration activities for evidence based benefits forecasting quantification of the economic impact of space exploration GDP impact, employment, enabled revenues, qualitative or semiquantitative assessments of the benefits of the technological, strategic, inspirational, scientific and international dimensions of space exploration exploration activities contributing to addressing global challengesthe UN Sustainable Development Goals appraisal of change initiatives and portfolio prioritisation costbenefit, real options analysis, costeffectiveness, multicriteria analysis summative and formative evaluation methodologies of impact of space exploration and benefits ex post benefit assessment. Outputs of the research will provide guidance and methodological foundation to the European Exploration Envelope Programme Benefit Management practices, aligned with the strategic planning and reporting activities. The Research Fellow will also ensure that the work carried out is coordinated with related initiatives in other ESA directorates, including ESAs catalogue of activities supporting UN Sustainable Development Goals, and ESAs Space Economy InterDirectorate Working Group. The post holder is expected to be actively engaged with academic scholarship, with a view to disseminate research outputs to the larger academic community and to identify opportunities for engagement and partnership in this and related research activities and growing the ESA network with universities and academia in this field.
