The area has two functions as a user of the platforms and missions developed by the programme and as a service provider providing knowledge and expertise needed to develop and operate technologies, missions and platforms. Exploration Science covers any research in HRE programmes where scientific methodology is applied to create new knowledge on missions beyond Low Earth Orbit or to support missions beyond Low Earth Orbit. Exploration science may cover fundamental or applied scientific research. Fundamental science includes research where no immediate application for the research is apparent. Examples of fundamental science could include planetary geology, astrophysics, fundamental physics and astrobiology. Applied science includes research which is driven by an application, frequently linked to future exploration capabilities or technologies. Examples of applied science include biological effects of radiation for long duration human space flight, space resource exploration and characterisation and chemical and physical processes for life support and space resources applications. There is substantial overlap between fundamental and applied research, such that they cannot be considered in isolation from each other. One of the objectives of this service is to engage with the Scientific Community, working in research related to the Moon, Mars, space resources and deep space, on robotic and human missions and mission studies. This includes working with Topical Teams, Science Working Groups, individual scientists and teams of scientists as well as supporting community meetings and events. The Exploration Science and Research Support Service shall cover part of the resources needed to coordinate Topical Teams and provide science definition for exploration studies and provide ongoing scientific engagement in projects implemented in HRE as part of the E3P programme. The Exploration science and research support service team will support activities related to space resource utilisation research and research at or relating to Mars. Such research may be undertaken On Deep Space crewed and uncrewed platforms, including the Gateway At the Moon At Mars In ground based facilities and platforms The Contractor shall be involved in 2 areas 4.1 Exploration Science in Studies and Projects A Project postSRR or Study preSRR Scientist shall be assigned to all studies for payloads, missions and systems for which science benefits are intended. The assigned Scientist coordinates all aspects of the science including Establishing and supporting a user community, engaging them in science definition activities and preparing the establishment of a formal Science Team Generating science and research objectives and requirements. Iterating those requirements during studies and in consultation with users in response to the technical work performed. Supporting benefit management as the benefit owner for all science and research benefits. Assessing the technical baseline, system requirements and performance against the science requirements in reviews. Preparing the Science Management Plan Leading or supporting research activities which support the development of missions and system concepts and requirements. Preparing and coordinating Announcements of Opportunity, Peer Reviews and Selection processes for Experiments, Science Teams, and Projects. Supporting in the management of science teams and preparations for science operations. Preparing science operations and science data pipelines for scientific utilisation. Supporting science operations activities. Ensuring that scientific data is made available to the community and supporting its utilisation. Initiating and supporting research activities which aid design and implementation Post operations support to users of the data, which is made available through the ESA archive 4.2 Exploration Science in Ground Based Research Ground based research undertaken as part of HRE activities may be performed internally within ESA or through external entities through cooperation or under contract. Such research may be fundamental or applied in nature, the later often providing enabling knowledge to HRE projects. The service shall provide expert support to such activities where needed to advance ESA exploration missions and studies. The main Tasks for this part of the service will be Provide support to ground based research activities relating to Mars and space resources related research. This may include in house scientific activities in ESA, including in a laboratory setting. working with ESA staff, research fellows and ESA sponsored PhD students. Supporting interfaces with research activities undertaken outside of ESA and which have either been commissioned by ESA or are undertaken in cooperation with ESA. 4.3 Additional Activities Supporting the formulation of new research activities and concepts within ESA and with Topical Teams and other external scientific groups Recording and tracking actions and requirements for activities in the team. Support the planning and coordination of interactions between members of the team. Supporting the benefit management, performance tracking and reporting processes of the HRE directorate. REQUIREMENTS The contractor shall demonstrate adequate expertise for the individual areas defined. The individuals providing the support service shall demonstrate adequate expertise for the individual areas defined above and have a professional background and expertise, which allows them to provide support for more than one individual project, increasing the efficiency. The individuals providing science coordination support shall have the following profile Science PhD in a relevant discipline from a recognized Institution Demonstrated expertise in the individual science areas and projects related to Science of Mars e.g. Mars atmosphere, geology and geophysics Science of space resources e.g. experimental chemical processes for production of materials or oxygen from extraterrestrial materials Fluency in English, knowledge of other member state languages is an asset.
