Exploration science may cover fundamental or applied scientific research. Fundamental science includes research where no immediate application for the research is apparent. Examples of fundamental science could include planetary geology, astrophysics, fundamental physics and astrobiology. Applied science includes research which is driven by an application, frequently linked to future exploration capabilities or technologies. Examples of applied science include biological effects of radiation for long duration human space flight, space resource exploration and characterisation and chemical and physical processes for life support and space resources applications. There is substantial overlap between fundamental and applied research, such that they cannot be considered in isolation from each other. One of the objectives of this service is to engage with the Scientific Community, working in research related to the Moon, Mars, space resources and deep space, on robotic and human missions and mission studies. This includes working with Topical Teams, Science Working Groups, individual scientists and teams of scientists as well as supporting community meetings and events.
