Reuters: With the world population rising, demographers are grappling with one of the most pressing issues of the century - will there be enough food for an extra two to four billion people? Projections of global population growth vary widely with the United Nations last month forecasting numbers rising to 9.6 billion in 2050 and around 10.9 billion by the end of the century from 7.2 billion currently. EC launches EUR 2.5 bln public-private big data partnership
2014-10-13 16:17:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) The European Commission has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Big Data Value Association that will see EUR 2.5 billion allocated to a series of big data projects between 2015 and 2020. The EC itself has earmarked EUR 500 million in funding from Horizon 2020, with private partners pledging to at least quadruple that figure. The aim is to open up 30 percent of the global data market for European suppliers, creating some 100,000 new data-related jobs by 2020. The EC said added benefits could include 10 percent lower energy consumption, better health-care outcomes and more productive industrial machinery. Presenting the partnership, outgoing EU digital economy commissioner Neelie Kroes described data as "the motor and foundation of the future economy", adding that "every kind of organisation needs the building blocks to boost their performance, from farm to factory, from the lab to the shop floor." Kroes signed the MoU with Jan Sundelin, president of Big Data Value Association, representing companies such as Atos, Nokia, Orange, SAP, Siemens, as well as research bodies such as Fraunhofer and the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence.

Polish telecommunications market worth PLN 44.7 bln in 2013
2014-10-07 21:42:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) In 2013, the value of the telecommunications market in Poland was PLN 44.7 billion, down by 4 percent compared with 2012, reports Media2.pl. Based on the report 'Telecommunications Market in Poland 2014' by PMR, a decrease is also expected this year, but a slighter one. The mobile market had a significant share in the decrease. Together with a double-digit fall in fixed telephony, where services based on VoIP and WLL could not offset the fall in revenues from traditional voice services based on PSTN, a shrinkage of the whole market was inevitable. Data transmission, internet access and leased lines (DLISP) segments, which were recently verging on growth, were not able to offset the decrease, either.
