Global LTE subscriptions to hit 1 bln by year-end - GSA

(Telecompaper) LTE subscriptions reached 755 million worldwide at end June, according to a study for GSA by Ovum. For the first time, LTE exceeded 10 percent (10.44%) of the worldwide subscription total for all mobile technologies. GSA expects over 1 billion LTE subscriptions worldwide by the end of the year. Around 441 million LTE subscriptions were added in the year to end June, for an annual growth of 140 percent. In the quarter, the number of LTE subscriptions increased by 113.5 million, over 52 percent higher than for 3G/WCDMA-HSPA which gained 74.4 million. GSM subscriptions fell by over 98 million in the quarter.

FCC distributes USD 1 bln in CAF funds for rural broadband

(Telecompaper) The Federal Communications Commission has made a number of Connect America Fund (CAF) awards. Ten carriers have accepted USD 1.5 billion in annual support for rural broadband deployment, which, together with the carrier's own investment, will expand broadband to nearly 7.3 million rural consumers in 45 states nationwide and one US territory over the next few years. The FCC said 27 August was the final day for the carriers to decide whether to accept the offer of support from Phase II of the Connect America Fund. Most of the ten carriers are major national carriers, and their acceptance will infuse over USD 9 billion into rural broadband over the next six years. Specifically, CenturyLink accepted USD 505.7 million in annual, ongoing support to expand and support broadband for over 2.3 million of its rural customers nationwide and to bring broadband speeds of at least 10 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up to nearly 1.2 million homes and businesses in its rural service areas where the cost of broadband deployment might otherwise be prohibitive. AT&T accepted USD 427.7 million in annual, ongoing support for over 2.2 million of its rural customers. The operator will also seek to bring speeds of at least 10/1 Mbps to over 1.1 million homes and businesses in its rural service areas where the cost of broadband deployment might otherwise be prohibitive. Cincinnati Bell accepted USD 2.2 million for over 14,000 of its rural customers.and to bring 10/1 Mbps for 7000 homes and businesses in particularly underserved areas. Consolidated has accepted USD13.9 million for nearly 50,000 of its rural customers and to bring 10/1 Mbps to nearly 25,000 particularly underserved homes and businesses in its rural service areas.

Softbank president to spend JPY 60 bln on company stock

(Telecompaper) SoftBank Group announced that its president and COO Nikesh Arora has agreed to buy JPY 60 billion (USD 483 million) worth of the company's stock on the open market over the next six months. Softbank said Arora is making the investment in a personal capacity and the board approved the plan. "As a measure of my commitment, I have decided to take a personal bet on the SoftBank Group and ensure an alignment of vision, with our founder and Chairman & CEO Masayoshi Son," Arora said. "This is a large transaction for me, and involves taking an enormous risk in my life once again. However, I am extremely confident about the future of the SoftBank Group and the long-term objectives that we have set out. I intend to work closely with Mr. Son to make the vision a reality." Son said he was pleased with Arora's decision and their shared vision and expects the executive to succeed him eventually as CEO. Arora was previously head of Softbank in the US and became group president in June.

U.S. authorities seek to seize $1 bln in telecom probe -WSJ

Aug 14 U.S. authorities are asking counterparts in Europe to seize about $1 billion in assets related to an investigation into three telecom companies and intermediaries close to the daughter of Uzbekistan's president, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. Vimpelcom Ltd, Mobile TeleSystems and TeliaSonera AB are under scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as some authorities in Europe.

Cisco quarterly revenue up 4% to record USD 12.8 bln

(Telecompaper) Cisco reported record revenues for its fiscal fourth quarter to July of USD 12.8 billion, up 3.9 percent from the same period last year. Sales in the Americas increased 7 percent, while the both EMEA and APJC regions were flat. Product revenue growth was led by Collaboration and Data Center, growing at 14 percent each, while the main products Switching and NGN Routing grew by 2 percent and 3 percent, respectively. Cisco reported a gross margin of 60.2 percent, while operating costs were up 3 percent year-on-year. Compared to fiscal Q3, the company added 900 employees, mainly for investments in key growth areas such as security, cloud and software. Adjusted operating profit was still up 9 percent year-on-year to USD 3.8 billion, and net profit rose 3.2 percent to USD 2.3 billion. Adjusted EPS was up 7.3 percent to USD 0.59. Cisco generated USD 4.1 billion of operating cash flow in the quarter, up from USD 3.6 billion a year ago, and finished the fiscal year with total cash of USD 60.4 billion. Cisco's new CEO Chuck Robbins also noted the solid rise in deferred revenue, up 7 percent to USD 15.2 billion at year-end. "I'm particularly pleased with the strong growth of deferred revenue which shows we are very effectively driving our business to a more predictable software-based business model, at the same time as growing revenues and earnings." The company's product backlog was worth USD 5.1 billion at the end of fiscal 2015, down from USD 5.4 billion a year earlier. For fiscal Q1, Cisco forecast revenue growth of 2-4 percent, an adjusted gross margin of 61-62 percent and adjusted EPS of USD 0.55-0.57. Over the full year, the company also expects around USD 700 million in charges for its restructuring announced in August.
