2013 Mac Pro teardown reveals Apples first easily repairable computer in years

2013-12-31 19:57:55| Extremetech

The 2013 Mac Pro has been torn down, and rather remarkably, in addition to it being surprisingly good value for money, it's actually fairly easy to fix and upgrade! Upgrading the Mac Pro's RAM is easier than your desktop or laptop PC, and it's also fairly easy to upgrade the Intel Xeon (Ivy Bridge-E) CPU. All of the major components are modular and can be easily removed, though proprietary connectors mean that you can't upgrade the graphics cards or SSD with off-the-shelf components. Overall, iFixit gives the Mac Pro a repairability score of 8 out of 10; much, much higher than the latest MacBooks, iPhones, and iPads.

Chromebooks pick up 10% of the computer market in 2013, capitalizing on Windows 8s failure

2013-12-30 14:21:41| Extremetech

Surprisingly, out of Amazon's top three best-selling laptops this holiday season, two of them are Chromebooks. Even weirder, according market research company NPD, Chromebooks account for 21% of all commercial US laptop sales so far this year, and 10% of all computers and tablets sold in the US. In 2012, Chromebooks accounted for just 0.2% of all computer and tablet sales. Is this really happening? Is Google doing it again, first with Android taking the world by storm, and now Chrome OS? Is the low-cost, netbook-in-sheep's-clothing Chromebook the surprise breakout hit of 2013?

Computer Pioneer, Subjected to Homophobic Prosecution, Pardoned by Queen

2013-12-27 18:19:19| TechNewsWorld

Alan Turing, a British man whose code-breaking prowess helped thwart Nazi Germany in World War II, was pardoned this week by Queen Elizabeth for his decades-old "crime." Turing was prosecuted in 1952 for "gross indecency" for having a sexual relationship with another man, a ruling that resulted in the loss of his security clearance and compulsory hormone treatment. Two years later, he died from cyanide poisoning in what was ruled a suicide.
