Trucking industry concerned about size of vessel for ferry service

The trucking industry says it needs to know that a ferry saiing between Yarmouth and Portland in 2016 and beyond will be able to accommodate them. A delay by Bay Ferries in announcing the type of vessel it plans on using for the Nova Scotia to New England ferry service this summer is causing concern in the trucking industry, says the executive director for the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association .

The head of the Justice Department's antitrust division said he's concerned about the proposed voting trust structure Canadian Pacific Railway wants to use to acquire Norfolk Southern Corp. Bill Baer said at a Senate antitrust oversight hearing March 9 that the Justice Department will submit comments to the U.S. Surface Transportation Board, which has been asked to issue an order confirming the validity of the mechanism. FedEx Corp. has told U.S. rail regulators that it is against Canadian Pacific Railway's proposed merger with Norfolk Southern Corp., adding to a long list of shippers opposing the deal.

A former PG&E employee due to testify about stonewalling and document destruction linked to the company's gas pipeline system has also held private conversations with Carmel officials who fear the utility's record keeping remains so flawed that explosions such as those that happened in San Bruno and Carmel could reoccur, Carmel officials said in a statement Monday. "It is clear PG&E hasn't spent the time or money necessary to fix the biggest ongoing threat to public safety: accurate records of the pipelines beneath our homes and businesses," Carmel Mayor Jason Burnett said Monday.
